摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set an ignition timing at an optimum when an intake air quantity is controlled for non-throttle operation by controlling valve timings of an intake valve and an exhaust valve. SOLUTION: A basic ignition timing ADV at a valve timing of a base (during throttle operation) is set corresponding to an engine rotating speed Ne and a target air quantity TQ (S1). A correction amount HOS1 is set corresponding to an inlet valve closing timing IVC so that the ignition timing is advanced more as an effective compression ratio is smaller with its change (S2). A correction amount HOS2 is set corresponding to an inlet valve opening timing IVO so that the ignition timing is advanced as it is earlier (S3). A correction amount HOS3 is set corresponding to an exhaust valve closing timing EVC so that the ignition timing is advanced as it is apart from TDC (S4). The ignition timing ADV is determined by correcting a basic ignition timing MADV in accordance with the correction amounts GOS1-HOS3 (S5).

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To raise the effective compression ratio to improve combustion by stratifying EGR gas and fresh air in an internal combustion engine provided with electromagnetically-operated intake valves and exhaust valves and performing non-throttle operation. SOLUTION: For a specified period after completion of an exhaust stroke (exhaust top dead centre), either one exhaust valve of two exhaust valves provided at one cylinder, is opened to such back exhaust gas to the combustion chamber to impart swirl to the exhaust gas (EGR gas). In an intake stroke after an exhaust valve is closed, or in a compression stroke, in a state of negative pressure in the combustion chamber, an intake valve out of two intake valves provided at one cylinder on a diagonal line of an exhaust valve is opened to such fresh air into the combustion chamber, to impart swirl to the fresh air. Fuel is injected from a fuel injection valve so as to carry the fuel with the swirl flow of the fresh air.

SOLUTION: According to engine operation conditions, target torque is calculated and a torque fluctuation amount of an engine is detected. On a torque line, in which intake valve closing timing IVC and a valve overlap (an O/L position, for instance) of an intake valve and an exhaust valve are made as parameters, the target torque is controlled to the combination of an intake valve closing timing IVO and the valve overlap (the O/L position), in which the internal EGR rate becomes the vicinity of a maximum within the range of the allowable limit of the torque fluctuation amount, according to the torque fluctuation amount detected actually. Namely, when the torque fluctuation amount is smaller than the allowable limit value, control is performed in an internal EGR rate increasing direction, and when the torque fluctuation amount is larger than the allowable limit value, the control is performed in an internal EGR rate decreasing direction.

The opening and closing period of the suction and exhaust of the suction.exhaust valves 3, 4 by the valve driving device 2 is controlled corresponding to the predetermined target opening and closing period of the engine 1, particularly the close period IVC before the suction bottom dead center of the suction valve 3 is variably controlled within a wide range by the accelerator opening and the rotating speed of the engine, or the required torque predetermined on the basis of these to control the amount of sucked air whereby the quick close miller cycle is formed. On this occasion, the internal EGR control is performed by temporarily opening the valve during the period when the combustion chamber 7 has the negative pressure after the closing of the suction valve 3 in the area which requires the EGR determined by the rotating speed of the engine and the load.
