In the first plate 18, a volume flow of the fuel circulating through the first channel 50 is increased to supply the water in the fuel battery 10 again. In the second plate 22, a volume flow of the oxidant circulating through the second channel 54 is maintained constant so as to supply the water in the fuel battery 10 again.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water transport plate with optimized physical characteristics for considerably improving an operation of a fuel cell. SOLUTION: In a preferred method, slurry is formed by mixing graphite powder, reinforced fibers, cellulose fibers, and a thermosetting resin with liquid. A sheet 4 is formed by pouring the slurry on a screen, and a sheet of paper is formed by drying the sheet 4. The paper is cut at a desired size, and laid up. PIeces of the laid-up paper 2 are laminated by pressure and heat, and a water transport plate can be formed by carbonizing and making graphite the laminated laid-up paper, and the water transport plate is processed at a desired shape. The finished water transport plate has optimized physical characteristics such as foam pressure, water permeability, a median pore diameter, porosity, surface passing electric resistivity, and compressive yield strength.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell plate which provides a generally even flow distribution across a flow field of each channel.SOLUTION: A plate 18 comprises an inlet manifold 20 and an outlet manifold 22 which are in communication with a flow field 24. The flow field 24 includes multiple channels 26. Some channels (second channel set 36) among the channels 26 receive a restricted flow from the inlet manifold 20 as compared to some channels (first channel set 34) among the other channels 26. A fluid flow from the inlet manifold 20 is supplied to the first channel set 34, and flows from the first channel set 34 via a gas diffusion layer to the second channel set 36 under the flow restriction, thereby providing a generally even flow distribution across the flow field.
