    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a signal routing device different from a conventional form. SOLUTION: The signal routing device (10) includes a multimode beamsplitter waveguide (20) connected to a multimode recombiner waveguide (24) by a set of parallel relay waveguides (22). Each relay waveguide (22) contains each electro-optic phase shifter (36). Sets of input and output waveguides (18, 28) are connected to the beamsplitter and the recombiner waveguides (20, 24), respectively. The input and the output waveguides (18, 28) are periodically spaced at off-center positions across each multimode waveguide transverse cross-section associated therewith. Different sets of phase shifts provide for radiation in any one of the input waveguides (18) being transferred selectively to any one or more of the output waveguides (28) according to selectable signal routing.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device used for a beam splitting, a beam recombining and a related applications thereof. SOLUTION: The optical device (10) includes a rectangular multimode waveguide (20) which connects a first coupling waveguide (18) to two second coupling waveguides (22 and 24). The first coupling waveguide (18) is operated at its basic mode and gives an input which excites a series of symmetry modes of the multimode waveguide (20). The modal dispersion along the multimode waveguide (20) enables an input excitation (70a) transformed into separate output excitations (75a and 75b) of which the center is located on respective second coupling waveguides (22 and 24). A radiation intensity distribution (75) becomes zero in the end wall region of the multimode waveguide between the second coupling waveguides (22 and 24). Thus, a reflection is minimized and a beam splitting efficiency is increased.
