PREPARATION:An optically active fluorine-containing hydroxyketone derivative shown by formula II is reduced in a solvent such as diethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane, acetonitrile or acetic anhydride in the presence of a reducing agent such as diisobutylaluminum hydride or tetramethylammonium triacetoxyborohydride at -70-10 deg.C to give an optically active compound shown by formula I.

CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula II useful as an intermediate for trifluorothymidine (a carcinostatic agent) is produced economically, by (1) reacting the compound of formula I (Rf is perfluoroalkyl; X is Cl, Br or I) with metallic magnesium at room temperature usually using tetrahydrofuran as a solvent, (2) reacting the reaction mixture with carbon dioxide preferably at +10--10 deg.C by introducing carbon dioxide gas into the reaction system, and (3) treating the resultant reaction mixture with a mineral acid, preferably hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, etc. The starting compound of formula I can be easily produced by halogenating a perfluoroalkyl-substituted ethylene derivative which is readily available on an industrial scale.

Palladium or ruthenium is especially preferable as the metal used as the catalyst, the metallic compound is dissolved in an aqueous solvent, a carrier such as active carbon, etc., is immersed in the solvent, the compound is adsorbed on the carrier, heat treatment is carried out by solvent distillation off at 100 deg.C, further the resulting substance is reduced under heating and the catalyst is prepared. The amount of the metal supported is preferably 0.1-5wt%.

Bromine is preferably used in an amount of 1-3mol based on 1mol perfluoroalkyl iodide.
