    • PURPOSE:To eliminate the generation of the angle deviation between the optical fibers on an incident side and an exit side and to allow the assembly without adjustment by diagonally cutting a groove at the intermediate of one piece of the optical fiber embedded in a substrate and disposing polarization beam splitters and a Faraday rotor in this groove. CONSTITUTION:The groove 8 to accommodate an optical element 6 is diagonally cut at a prescribed angle theta at the intermediate of one piece of the optical fiber 4 embedded in the substrate 2. The parallel flat plate-shaped polarization beam splitters 10, 12, 14 constituting the optical element 6 and the Faraday rotor 16 are disposed in this groove 8. Further, a cylindrical magnet is built to cover the rotor 16. The angle theta at which the groove 8 becomes the optical axis of the optical fibers 4 and the thicknesses of the beam splitters 10, 12, 14 are previously designed in such a manner that the refractive angle of the optical fibers 4 and the lateral deviation by the polarization beam splitters are offset. The light emitted from the beam splitter 14 on the output end side can, therefore, be made incident on the exit side optical fiber 4B existing in the same optical axis as the optical axis of the incident side optical fiber 4A.

    • PURPOSE:To make a switching speed extremely fast and to enable low-voltage driving by laminating a thin metallic film and a dielectric thin film which is thicker than it alternately many times at right angles to an axis and thus arranging a polarizer which contacts the overall sectional area of a core. CONSTITUTION:A rectangular prismatic PLZT (Pb, La, Zr, and Ti) 5 which has electrodes 6 and 7 on its opposite surfaces is fitted and arranged in a groove part 8, but the depth direction of the groove 8 is set to the direction between the electrodes 6 and 7 of the PLZT 5 and one electrode 7 is arranged in contact with the bottom surface of the groove part 8; and a couple of groove parts 8 are provided at specific distance from the PLZT 5 and polarizers 9 whose lamination direction is in a necessary direction to constitute an optical switch. Further, the PLZT 5 and polarizers 9 are embedded in the grooves parts 4 and 8 and a contacting surface which is large enough to cover the entire sectional area of the core 4 is provided between the groove parts and core 3. Consequently, the low-voltage driving is possible, the switching speed is extremely high, and transmission circuit simplification and size reduction become possible.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain an optical waveguide which has optional spread from a visible part to an IR region with less light loss by diffusing potassium as a dopant on a glass substrate and forming a glass film thereon then diffusing again the potassium. CONSTITUTION:An Al layer 4 including a groove 6 is formed on a glass substrate 1 contg. Na ion and is immersed in molten KNO3 7 to diffuse K ions into the part of the groove 6. A glass film 2 is formed by RF sputtering on the substrate 1. The substrate 1 is heated to diffuse again the K ion, thus forming a diffused region 3 having a high refractive index. The diffused region 3a having ununiform spread is also formable by using a carbon dioxide laser and performing locally distributed heating. The optical waveguide having optional spread from the visible part to IR part with less light loss is thus obtd.
