      SOLUTION: In the method for working the pipe, after bending the end portion 1a of the pipe 1 fixed to a fixing tool 11 toward the inside in the radial direction of the pipe 1 by the rotation of a roller 29 which is provided to the device 12 for working the pipe, the end portion 1a is bent until the end portion 1a comes into close contact with the inside 3a of the pipe 1 with the roller 31.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for forming pipes, which method and apparatus can quickly and smoothly reduce the diameter of metallic pipes having an axially asymmetric cross-sectional shape.
      SOLUTION: The apparatus for forming pipes reduces the diameter of the end portion of a metallic pipe having the axially asymmetric cross-sectional shape, such as an ellipse. The apparatus comprises a main spindle motor having a chuck for gripping the metallic pipe, a rotation angle sensor attached to the main spindle motor, a working roller for forming the metallic pipe gripped by the chuck, a driving means which can drive the working roller in the directions of the principal axis and the radius of the metallic pipe, and a control means for controlling the diving means. The working roller is radially advanced and receded synchronizing with the rotation angle of the main spindle motor such that the contact point of the working roller with the metallic pipe traces the preset cross sectional shape. At the same time, the preset cross-sectional shape is varied synchronizing with the feed of the working roller in the direction of the main spindle. Because the diameter of the metallic pipe is smoothly reduced by repeating the process described above up to the required cross sectional shape, the diameter of the metallic pipe can be quickly and smoothly reduced.
