    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat insulation and heat retention method for a piping installation not causing clogging of a strainer of an emergency core cooling system with broken debris or the like of a heat retaining material and not stopping water pouring into a nuclear reactor in operation of a pump of the emergency core cooling system at the time of an accident attended with piping rupture in the nuclear power plant.SOLUTION: By using a metal coated heat insulating and heat retaining material formed by compression-charging a polyimide foam of 4-10 kg/min density in a metal case for heat insulation and heat retention of piping, the broken debris of the polyimide foam floats on the surface of water of a suppression pool without being mixed into the water and does not clog the strainer. Thus, a stop of the pump of the emergency core cooling system is not needed. Since the polyimide foam is compression-charged into the metal case in consideration of contraction with heat from the piping installation, the heat insulating and heat retaining performance is not impaired for a long period of time.
