    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing metal titanium by which high-grade metal titanium can be manufactured at a low cost. SOLUTION: A formed body 2 of titanium dichloride is produced by forming solid titanium dichloride in a prescribed shape with a forming machine or the like. The produced formed body 2 of titanium dichloride is put in a reduction vessel 1. Molten magnesium 3 is fed into the reduction vessel 1, whereby the formed body 2 of titanium dichloride is reduced by contact with the molten magnesium 3 to produce a metal titanium block 5 as well as magnesium chloride 4 as a by-product. Since the metal titanium block 5 is kept in non-contact with a wall of the reduction vessel 1, no metal titanium deposits on the wall, accordingly when the metal titanium block 5 is taken out of the reduction vessel 1, a conventional step of press-extracting metal titanium is made unnecessary. Contamination by iron, nickel, chromium, etc., as materials of the wall of the reduction vessel 1 is also prevented. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
