    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewage treatment apparatus and method which can quickly cope with fluctuations in the amount of inflow water and the pollution loading amount at normal times, and can be used for emergency restoration measures against a sewage treatment facility having become dysfunctional by disaster or natural phenomena, such as an earthquake, a tidal wave, or local severe rain.SOLUTION: A sewage treatment apparatus includes: a biological reaction tank 1 which performs aerobic biological treatment of inflow sewage; a filter material module 2 which is provided in the biological reaction tank 1 and arranged with a plurality of string-like filter materials; air diffusers 3a which are provided below the filter material module 2; a solid-liquid separation apparatus 4 which solid-liquid separates a mixed liquid from the biological reaction tank 1 into treated water and separated sludge; and a sludge return pipe 9 which returns the separated sludge to the biological reaction tank 1.
