摘要： The invention pertains to a communication system (300) including one or more communication channels (10), each channel comprising a transmitter unit (20) and a receiver unit (40). Each transmitter unit (20) is connected through an optical fibre link (30) to its associated receiver unit (40). In operation, each receiver unit (20) receives payload data from its associated sending client and adds overhead data to the payload data to generate corresponding aggregate data (600). The aggregate data of each transmitter unit (20) is conveyed through the fibre link (30) to its associated receiver unit (40) which receives the aggregate data, decodes it to separate the payload data from the overhead data and then outputs the payload data to its associated receiving client. The receiver unit (40) interprets the overhead data and uses it for controlling and managing the payload data in the system (300). The one or more channels of the system (300) are capable of adapting to the bit data rate of their associate payload data; thus, the channels are capable of operating mutually asynchronously, thereby circumventing a need for justification in the aggregate data. Moreover, each transmitter unit (20) is operable to add the overhead data to the payload data when generating the aggregate data so that the number of payload bits relative to the number of overhead bits is in a fixed ratio of 31:1. Such a fixed ratio renders the aggregate data simpler to decode and bit error rate easier to determine therefrom.

摘要： A communications switch comprising a plurality of numerically identified input traffic ports, a plurality of numerically identified output traffic ports, at least one significant label extractor and at least one numerical processor, the communications switch being arranged whereby each message entering the communication switch by a numerically identified input traffic port contains a header, which header contains a label stack, which label stack includes at least one valid label, of which one valid label is a significant label. The numerical value of the significant label contained within the header of a particular message which entered the communications switch via a particular numerically identified input traffic port is extracted by the at least one significant label extractor and is supplied to one of the at least one numerical processors. The numerical processor uses the significant label of the particular message and the numerical value of the particular numerically identified input traffic port to form a numerical result which directly equates to the number of the numerically identified output traffic port by which the particular message leaves the communications switch and wherein the numerical result is equal to the modulo addition of the numerical value of the significant label and the numerical value of the particular numerically identified input traffic port.

摘要： An optical communications system using forward error correction (FEC) to correct errors in signals carried by the system. Optical signals on the system are dropped at nodes and converted to electrical signals by avalanche photodiodes (APDs) at the node receivers. An FEC chip operates on the electrical signal to correct errors. The error rate is used to control the APD bias voltage which affects signal noise and therefore error rate. The errors in a predetermined interval are counted and a determination made as to whether the error rate is rising with time. The bias voltage is derived from the value of a counter whose count is incremented each interval. If the error rate is rising, the counting direction is changed.

摘要： A structure which exhibits magnetic properties when it receives electromagnetic radiation is formed from an array of capacitive elements each of which is smaller, and preferably much smaller, than the wavelength of the radiation. Each capacitive element has a low resistance conducting path associated with it and is such that a magnetic component of the received electromagnetic radiation induces an electrical current to flow around the path and through the associated element. The creation of internal magnetic fields generated by the flow of the induced electrical current gives rise to the structure's magnetic properties.
