    • PURPOSE:To prevent the infiltration of hydrogen into the glass substance of a core and clad from the outside and to prevent the deterioration in performance, such as increase in transmission loss by providing an amorphous carbon layer which does not contain hydrogen in the outside part of the clad provided on the core. CONSTITUTION:This optical fiber has the core 1 and the clad 2 and is formed with the amorphous carbon layer 3 which does not contain the hydrogen on the outer perihery of the clad 2. A silicone resin layer 4 and a plastic jacket 5 consisting of a thermoplastic resin, etc., are provided on the carbon layer 3. The hydrogen is not substantially bound in the dangling bond in the layer from the beginning with the optical fiber having the carbon layer 3 in such a manner and, therefore, the arrival of the hydrogen at the core 1 and clad 2 which are the glass substance is substantially eliminated. The deterioration in the performance, such as transmission characteristics of the optical fiber, is, therefore, effectively prevented.

    • PURPOSE:To efficiently add an additive at a low temperature and readily and economically carry out vitrification, by vitrifying a porous preform, provided in a furnace core tube and capable of rotating and lowering while thermally vaporizing the additive placed in a small-diameter part provided at the lower bottom of a furnace core tube and adding the vaporized additive to the preform. CONSTITUTION:A heater 6 which is the first heater for sintering is placed around an intermediate part of a sintering chamber 5 in which a seed rod 3, passing through a lid 4 and having a porous preform 2 mounted at the lower end thereof is placed in a cylindrical furnace core tube 1 consisting of quartz glass to constitute an apparatus for producing synthetic glass. An additive 8, e.g. NdCl3 or AlCl3, is then charged from a branched part 9 into a small- diameter part 7 provided at the lower end of the furnace core tube 1 using, e.g. a spoon. The branched part 9 is subsequently connected to an atmospheric gas feeder and an atmospheric gas, such as H2 or Cl2, is fed. A burner 10 is simultaneously ignited to heat the additive and the sintering chamber 5 is heated with the heater 6 to rotate and lower the porous preform 2 through the seed rod 3. The preform 2 is successively sintered from the lower end side and vitrified while adding the vaporized additive 8 to the preform 2.
