    • PURPOSE:To enable relatively easy and accurate measurement of the dispersion characteristics of optical fibers having different dispersion characteristics. CONSTITUTION:The group delay waveform characteristic of a coupled optical fiber F3 which are constituted by welding a first optical fiber F1 on which the measured data of the group delay wavelength characteristic indicating the relation between the wavelength of inputted signal light and its group delay time are already obtained and a second optical fiber F2 on which the group delay wavelength characteristic is not obtained to each other at a prescribed length ratio is measured by an interference method. On the other hand, one approximate expression is selected for deciding the dispersion of the fiber F3 and each coefficient of the expression is found so that the expression can fit each measured data of the group delay wavelength characteristics of the first and coupled fibers F1 and F3. Then each coefficient of the approximate expression expressing the group delay wavelength characteristic when the fiber F2 is independently used is found based on each coefficient of the expressions and length ratio. After finding the coefficients, the dispersion of the second optical fiber F2 is decided by differentiating the expression from which the coefficients are found with respect to the wavelength.
