摘要： PURPOSE:To increase the gain larger than heretofore and stabilize the gain- wavelength characteristics as well by specifically determining the density of aluminum to be doped together with an erbium (Er) and the density/beam length product for erbium. CONSTITUTION:In the periphery of quartz-based glass core 2, a quartz clad 3 whose index of refraction is smaller than that of the core 2 is formed, and further in the inside or its outer circumference of the core 2 is doped with an Er and Al are together in addition to a Ge for increasing the index of refraction. The density of Er is set to at most 3000ppm, while the density of Al is set to at least 8000ppm, and the product (density/beam length product) of the Er density and the beam length of an optical fiber 1 is set within a range of 12-18kppm.m. Therefore, since the Er density is set at most 3000ppm in advance, the Er can be prevented from micrometrical aggregation in the optical fiber in a case where the Al is shared. In addition, since the density/beam length product for the Er, the gain can be increased as compared with the case where the Er is doped individually.

摘要： PURPOSE:To enable relatively easy and accurate measurement of the dispersion characteristics of optical fibers having different dispersion characteristics. CONSTITUTION:The group delay waveform characteristic of a coupled optical fiber F3 which are constituted by welding a first optical fiber F1 on which the measured data of the group delay wavelength characteristic indicating the relation between the wavelength of inputted signal light and its group delay time are already obtained and a second optical fiber F2 on which the group delay wavelength characteristic is not obtained to each other at a prescribed length ratio is measured by an interference method. On the other hand, one approximate expression is selected for deciding the dispersion of the fiber F3 and each coefficient of the expression is found so that the expression can fit each measured data of the group delay wavelength characteristics of the first and coupled fibers F1 and F3. Then each coefficient of the approximate expression expressing the group delay wavelength characteristic when the fiber F2 is independently used is found based on each coefficient of the expressions and length ratio. After finding the coefficients, the dispersion of the second optical fiber F2 is decided by differentiating the expression from which the coefficients are found with respect to the wavelength.

CONSTITUTION:Pumping light introduced from a pumping light source 6 via a pumping light transmission system 30, and signal light from an optical fiber 4 for signal light incidence are coupled by using an optical coupler 14, and introduced into a fiber 18 doped with rare earth (Er) elements. The signal light is amplified, and only the amplified signal light is made to pass a band-pass filter 22. A wavelength selection filter 26 is interposed in the pumping light transmission system 30, and cuts off the amplified signal light returning from the fiber 18. Thereby said light is prevented from being again reflected toward the fiber 18 side, laser from being again reflected pumping light source 6 (laser diode LD chip) is protected from burnout. Hence high gain and high output of signal light, and reliability improvement and long life operation of the pumping light source can be realized.

Since the fiber 7 having a core part in which Er (erbium) is doped in a 0.01 to 1ppm low concentration state is used for the whole optical fiber transmission line or a large part of it, necessary amplification gain can be secured only by the transmission line itself. Consequently, the need for an optical amplifier to be used only for amplification can be eliminated, the system constitution can be simplified and the reduction in the cost can be attained.
