      PREPARATION: 12-Hydroxyandrosta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione of formula II is, preferably dissolved in a solvent such as pyridine and its sulfonation is effected by adding 1W2 molar amount, per mole of the dione, of a sulfonyl chloride of the formula: RSO
      2 Cl (R is alkyl) to give a sulfonate of formula III (the wavy line shows that the hydroxyl or RSO
      2 O is either alpha-configuration or beta-configuration). Then the product is subjected to desulfonation to give the objective compound of formula I .
