CONSTITUTION:Plural numbers of PLZT wafers 32 are arranged in parallel and fixed on a transparent substrate 30 with side ends of the wafers tightly adhered. In the wafer 32, there are provided connecting wires 34 in a matrix state to supply display driving signals to pixel electrode groups. On a part of the side and the edge part of the top of the PLZT wafer 32 adjacent to other wafers 32, a connecting conductive film 40 is formed to connect the connecting wires 34-34, 34-34 of the adjacent PLZT wafers 32, 32. This connecting conductive film 40 consists of a first connecting conductive film 36 formed by vapor deposition and a second connecting conductive film 38 formed by electrolytic plating. By this method, the display plane can be made large in size, and moreover, connecting wires 34-34 among PLZT wafers 32 can be connected in a matrix state with connecting conductive films 40.

Consequently, the wiring pattern 45 can be led out in four directions of the periphery of the PLZT plate 10. Further, through holes 47 and 47 for passing the fluorescent lamp 12 to the folded parts 40c and 40c perpendicular to the fluorescent lamp 12 are formed in the substrate surfaces.

    • PURPOSE:To provide the short wavelength light source which can easily modulate SHG light and SFM light, etc., at a high speed. CONSTITUTION:This short wavelength light source device consists of a semiconductor laser 1 as a light source, a modulator 4 consisting of an electrooptical material, such as PLZT, and an electrode capable of impressing electric fields, a polarizer 5 for photodetection, and a nonlinear optical material 7 and modulates the exit light from the semiconductor laser 1 by the modulator 4, thereby modulates the short wavelength light, such as SHG light and SFM light, by a nonlinear effect. Since a light modulating method using an electrooptical effect is used for modulation of light, driving is executed simply by impressing a voltage to the electrooptical material of the modulator 4. Since the need for passing a large current is eliminated, there is no need for a transistor, etc., for driving the semiconductor laser beam source 1 and the high-speed modulation by merely using such a power source as to allow the impression of a high frequency is possible.

    • PURPOSE:To simplify and facilitate the adjustment of white balance by changing the permeability of green damping filter as well as the application voltage applied to an electrode for display. CONSTITUTION:A green damping filter 40 is provided on the display surface side of a color filter 18, and by chaging the permeability of the filter 40 as well as the application voltage applied to an electrode 10 for display, white balance adjustment is carried out. Namely, by changing the permeability of the filter 40, the component of green light can be adjusted, while by changing the application voltage applied to the electrode 10, the component of red and blue lights can be adjusted. For example, by increasing the application voltage, the percentage of the blue color is reduced, while the percentage of the red color can be increased. By chaning the permeability of the filter 40 and the application voltage applied to the electrode 10, white balance can be adjusted. The white balance adjustment of the display device can thus be easily carried out.

    • PURPOSE:To increase each angle of visibility in the horizontal and vertical directions and improve the utilization efficiency of the light with the simple constitution, by forming the electrode surface of a display electrode in inclination by 45 deg. with respect to the horizontal plane and setting one polarization direction between of the first and second polarizing plates parallel to the horizontal plane and setting the other vertical. CONSTITUTION:Electrode surfaces of display electrodes 52 and 54 are formed in inclination by 45 deg. with respect to a horizontal plane, and each polarization direction of the first and second polarizing plates 56 and 58 is set in crossing at right angle, and one polarization direction is set parallel to the horizontal plane, and the other polarization direction is set vertical to the horizontal plane. Accordingly, when the 1/2 wave length voltage is applied on a PLZT substrate 50, the transmission light quantity increases to the max., while in the case where voltage is not applied on the PLZT substrate 50, the transmission light quantity becomes zero, and light leak is little in the aslant direction in the horizontal plane and vertical plane, and the contrast ratio does not reduce. Accordingly, the utilization efficiency can be made max., and each angle of visibility in the horizontal and vertical directions can be increased.
