CONSTITUTION:A rough contour 22 is inputted and is displayed over an original image 12 as shown in (b), and the edge strength and the ease gradient direction edge continuity) or picture elements included in this rough contour line 22 are obtained, and plural picture elements 33 having a continuity shown in (d) are obtained based on the edge gradient direction, and the picture element having the height edge strength (for example, the peak picture element) out of these continuous picture elements 33 is taken as a start point T0 of tracing, and the picture elements having the highest edge strength out of peripheral picture elements of a tracing point Ti is taken as the next tracing point Ti (i=i+1) to repeat tracing, and thus, a narrowed contour line 40 is obtained as shown in (f). Therefore, the accurate narrowed contour line 40 extended along peak picture elements is obtained, and an objective image 12a surrounded with this line 40 is accurately and surely extracted.

CONSTITUTION:A linear contour line 24 specifies a start point S of deviation, an end point E of deviation, and end point E of deviation, and a point M with the maximum deviation from a part deviated from a real contour line 30 of the original picture, a microprocessor stores position information of each specification point S, E, and M by the storage and display function of the specification position based on the program for storage and display of the specified position stored in a ROM and is displayed on the ROM. Then, the microprocessor rewrites information on SE of the linear contour line 24 of the contour line storage part by means of information of straight line 24a which connects the three points S, E, and M by the correction program and replaces the SE of the linear contour line 24 at the correction on the CRT display.

Therefore, the narrowed line contour 40 accurately traced along peak picture elements is obtained. Picture elements surrounded with this contour 40 are labelled to extract an objective image 12a.
