SOLUTION: This variable valve gear includes: a variable valve mechanism for operating a relative phase which is a relative rotational phase between a housing rotor and a vane rotor, between a most delayed angle phase and a most advanced angle phase; a restriction pin driven among a first projecting position with the range of the relative phase provided in the vane rotor and in which the restriction pin is projected from the vane rotor based on the supply/discharge state of working oil, a second projecting position in which the restriction pin is projected at a place different from the first, and a storage position in which the restriction pin is stored in the vane rotor; a phase restriction mechanism provided in the housing rotor for performing restriction by a restriction hole and a restriction groove in which the restriction pin projected from the vane rotor is fitted; and a hydraulic control mechanism. The supply/discharge state of the working oil with respect to the variable valve gear and the phase restriction mechanism is controlled by a single hydraulic control valve. When an intermediate load is applied to the engine, valve timing is set to the maximum delay state and the maximum lift amount is increased by the valve lift variable mechanism to delay the valve closing time IVC of the intake valve for intake compression based on the Atkinson cycle. In the case wherein the inner rotor is fixed at the intermediate lock position when starting the engine, the maximum lift amount is adjusted by the valve lift variable mechanism so as to obtain the appropriate valve timing to start the engine.
