    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce a high-quality fatty acid ester, which is usable as a biodiesel fuel, from a free fatty acid residual oil.SOLUTION: A free fatty acid residual oil is esterified by reacting it with a monovalent alcohol in the presence of a cation exchange resin, and a resulting esterification reaction solution is treated with an anion exchange resin. The use of the cation exchange resin as an esterification catalyst allows production of a fatty acid ester at a high conversion rate with an addition amount of the monovalent alcohol substantially equal to a stoichiometric proportion, and a subsequent treatment with the anion exchange resin allows a transesterification reaction of a triglyceride derived from a raw material by the catalytic effect of the anion exchange resin, in addition to adsorptive removal of the residual fatty acid or a pigment component. As a result, the high-purity fatty acid ester can be efficiently produced.
