    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spark ignition internal combustion engine capable of increasing the combustion speed of an air-fuel mixture formed in a cylinder.
      SOLUTION: The spark ignition internal combustion engine is provided with an ignition plug 1 disposed at the upper part of the cylinder. At the ignition timing, two tumble streams 3a, 3b swirling in opposite directions to each other are formed in the cylinder, and two tumble streams ascend along the approximately opposed positions of a cylinder bore, collide with each other near the position of the ignition plug at the upper part of the cylinder and descend adjoining each other toward the center part in the cylinder. An arc A generated in an ignition gap 1a of the ignition plug by one or both of the two tumble stream at this time is extended to the center part of the air-fuel mixture formed in the cylinder.

      SOLUTION: In the structure, a combustion chamber C is formed which is surrounded by a cylinder head lower face, a piston upper face Fp and a cylinder. On the cylinder head lower face in a top-view circular shape, an intake valve 11 and an exhaust valve 12 are provided at one side and at the other side, respectively, across a chord A in a top-view circular shape ranging toward an engine longitudinal direction X. On the piston upper face Fp, a conical tapered portion 16 is formed along the peripheral edge ranging from the peripheral edge toward a piston central direction and a recessed portion 17 is formed at the center. On the tapered portion 16 near the chord A, both an arrangement side portion e1 of the exhaust valve 12 and an arrangement side portion e2 of the intake valve 11, narrower than that, are continuously formed with a level difference.

      SOLUTION: The piston 1A for the internal combustion engine has a recessed portion 1aA on a crowned face 2aA. The recessed portion 1aA consists of a cylindrical inner face R1 on the side of an exhaust valve 52a which has a center axis P1 approximately parallel to a crank axis, a cylindrical inner face R2 on the side of an intake valve 52b which has a center axis P2 approximately parallel to the crank axis, and a flat part L which is formed between the cylindrical inner face R2 on the side of the intake valve 52b and the cylindrical inner face R1 on the side of the exhaust valve 52a. A width 1 of the flat part L in the direction perpendicular to the crank axis is 1/10 or more and 1/3 or less of a diameter D of the piston 1A.
