    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of occurrence of a false image caused by a grating lobe or side lobe with no bloated hardware nor cost up, and to raise azimuth resolution.
      SOLUTION: A transducer where a plurality of vibrators are arrayed in azimuth direction is used to transmit ultrasonic signals of varying frequency bands according to azimuth, and a frequency is selected for each azimuth to obtain a reception signal in the prescribed azimuth. In a Dopplar transmission method, for example, each vibrator is so driven that such ultrasonic wave is emitted as equivalent to when a point sound source virtually moves within a circle surrounded by a plurality of vibrators arrayed in azimuth direction. Thus, an ultrasonic wave signal of different frequency caused by Doppler shift effect according to azimuth is transmitted.

    • PURPOSE:To enable accurate measurement of vehicle height by continuously receiving reflected ultrasonic waves from a road surface or a vehicle after an ultrasonic wave is transmitted continuously varying the frequency thereof at a fixed cycle. CONSTITUTION:An ultrasonic transmitter 1 and an ultrasonic receiver 2 are provided at a specified height H above the road surface L. The transmitter 1 transmits an ultrasonic wave toward the road surface L and the receiver 2 receives ultrasonic waves reflected back from the road surface L or a vehicle CA. The frequency of the transmitted ultrasonic wave varies at a fixed cycle T. An output signal of the ultrasonic receiver is demodulated in the frequency to fetch a signal indicating a variation in the frequency. A signal indicating a variation in the frequency of the transmitted ultrasonic wave is compared with a signal indicating a variation in the frequency of the received ultrasonic wave to detect a phase difference therebetween, based on which a vehicle height is computed.
