    • PURPOSE:To extend the service life of a lance for stirring a molten metal in the stage of using said lance by holding the lance in a nonoxidative atmosphere after the treatment thereby preventing the oxidation of carbon in the refractories of the lance. CONSTITUTION:A molten metal is stirred and refined by using a lance 3 for stirring a molten metal consisting of a metallic pipe 7 having a gas passage hole 7' and refractories 8 covering the outside circumference thereof. Said lance is housed in a sealing vessel 10 after the treatment. The vessel 10 consists of a shell 11 and a heat insulating material 12 and is provided with a cover 13 to be opened and closed by a hinge 14 and a feed port 15 for inert gas. Said lance 3 is held in an inert atmosphere of N2, Ar, etc. in the vessel 10 to prevent the oxidation of carbon in the refractories 8 and to make effective use of the resistance to slag and spalling of carbon, whereby the service life of the lance 3 is extended.

    • PURPOSE:To extend the service life of a lance for stirring a molten metal and to reduce the cost ratio thereof in the stage of using said lance by packing finely granulated dry ice into the metallic pipe of said lance thereby cooling forcibly the pipe. CONSTITUTION:A molten metal is stirred and refined by using a lance 3 for stirring a molten metal consisting of a metallic pipe 7 having a gas passage hole 7' and refractories 8 covering the outside circumference thereof. The finely pulverized dry ice in a hopper 10 is forced by gaseous Ar, etc. into the pipe 7 after the end of the treatment so that the pipe is forcibly and effectively cooled by utilizing the sublimation heat of said ice. The difference in thermal expansion between the pipe 7 and the refractories 8 is thus decreased and the generation of the crack and peeling in the refractories and the bend, etc. of the pipe 7 is prevented, by which the life of the lance 3 is extended and the cost ratio thereof is reduced.

    • PURPOSE:To extend the service life of a lance for stirring a molten metal and to reduce the cost ratio thereof by using the lance for refining and running the gas cooled to an ordinary temp. or below in succession to the treatment thereby cooling the lance. CONSTITUTION:A lance 3 for stirring a molten metal which consists of a metallic pipe 7 having a gas passage hole 7 and covering refractories 8 enclosing the outside circumference thereof is immersed in the molten iron 4 in a ladle 1 and gas bubbling 6 is generated, whereby the molten iron 4 is stirred and refined. The gas cooled to an ordinary temp. or below is kept run in succession even after the end of the treatment to cool said pipe 7. The difference in the thermal expansion between the refractories 8 and the pipe 7 is thus decreased and the generation of the crack and stripping in the refractories 8 and the bend, etc. of the pipe 7 is prevented. Air, Ar, N2, CO2 or the like is cooled by being passed through a cooling tank filled therein with liquefied gas and is adequately used at a flow rate of 200-5,000Nl/min as the above-mentioned cooling gas.

    • PURPOSE:To enhance the efficiency of decarburization with injected oxygen, while reducing the diffusion of heat through the opening of a furnace to the smallest value, in the split-type refining furnace comprising upper and lower cells, by making the sectional area of the opening in the upper cell to a specified size. CONSTITUTION:In the split-type refining furnace comprising an upper cell 1 and a lower cell 2, wherein the upper and lower cells 1, 2 can be freely connected to and separated from each other, the sectional area of an opening 1A in the upper cell 1 is limited in a range of 0.002-0.03m by ton of molten iron to be charged in the lower cell 2. Hence the sectional area of the opening 1A can be made without deteriorating the efficiency of decarburization with oxygen, and the amount of heat diffusing through the opening 1A can be suppressed to the lowest value.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce an artificial stone having excellent strength and uniformity regardless of the largeness of the stone without causing the problem of deformation and breakage of a container for the production by using a CaO component-containing waste material and/or a CaO component- containing slug as a part of a raw material. SOLUTION: This method comprises caking a raw material for a stone, consisting essentially of a mixture of a fine powdery raw material comprising a CaO component-containing waste material and/or a CaO component-containing slug, and having carbonation activity, with a coarse grain raw material having no carbonation activity or a carbonation activity smaller than that of the fine powdery raw material, by carbonation reaction to provide a massive stone. The stone of a pile or a raw material-packed layer formed into the massive one is obtained by forming the pile of the raw material for the stone with added water, or a raw material-packed layer in an arbitrary space, blowing a raw material gas containing carbon dioxide gas into the interior thereof to solidify the pile of the raw material for the stone or the raw material-packed layer by carbonic acid by using CaCO3 formed by the carbonation reaction of CaO and/or Ca(OH)2 included mainly in the fine powder raw material.
