    • PURPOSE:To easily produce phenols in high selectivity and yield on an industrial scale at a low cost by hydrolyzing a halogenated aromatic compound in the presence of a copper-containing crystalline silica as a catalyst resistant to inactivation caused by the deposition of coke, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced by hydrolyzing a halogenated aromatic compound (e.g., chlorobenzene) with water at a molar ratio (water/halogenated aromatic compound) of 0.5-100 in the presence of a copper-containing crystalline silica catalyst produced, e.g., by impregnating silicalite with copper in the form of an aqueous solution of cupric sulfide, usually at 250-600 deg.C under reduced, normal or positive pressure. The copper content of the catalyst is 0.1-10wt.%. The addition of copper to the catalyst is carried out by conventional method such as impregnation, evaporation to dryness or kneading using an aqueous solution or organic solvent solution of a copper salt such as copper chloride, copper sulfate, copper nitrate or copper acetate, however, especially preferable method is hydrothermal synthesis of crystalline silica in the presence of a copper compound.
