    • A recording/reproducing apparatus, e.g. a digital video tape recorder, etc., is applicable to a transmission system so as sufficiently to utilize communication capacity. The recording/reproducing apparatus comprises: a recording element (e.g. a rotary head) for recording, onto a recording medium (e.g. a magnetic tape), digital data which has been time base compression processed and is delivered from the outside, e.g. broadcasting station side, etc.; a control circuit for carrying out control such as to read out the digital data from the recording medium at a speed lower than a recording speed in dependency upon the time base compression processing applied to the digital data; and an output circuit for outputting, as a reproduced output, digital data which has been read out from the recording medium. In addition to the above-mentioned ordinary reproduction, in the case of carrying out fast-feed reproduction or rewinding reproduction, the control circuit may carry out control such that the magnetic tape runs at a higher speed, and the output circuit may select and output only valid digital data of digital data obtained by tracing of the rotary head.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture processor and a picture processing method capable of preventing a gradation converting curve from being prepared by wrong reference signal values by properly discriminating the highlight position and the shadow position of picture information. SOLUTION: The gradation converting curve is prepared based on the histogram of each RGB color prepared from a picture read by an optical unit 105 and the picture is decomposed into the channel pictures of each RGB color (step S602). A maximum and a minimum are calculated by the histogram prepared from the decomposed channel pictures (step S604). When the positions of the pixels of each RGB color of the maximum and the minimum match by a rate equal to or larger than a prescribed value (YES at a step S607), the maximum and the minimum are set to be the reference signal values to prepare the gradation converting curve passing through the set reference signal values. Thus, even when there is not a black part and a white part, the high light position and the shadow position are compared by each RGB color, thereby setting of the wrong reference signal values is prevented.
