    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a composite material having excellent durability against a flying and colliding object at a low cost by impregnating a ceramic sintered body having a metal filler with a specified metal and then forming a hard plating film on the top and back surfaces of the body. SOLUTION: A metal filler such as steel having >10 aspect ratio and projections on the top end for hooking is mixed with a ceramic powder such as Al2 O3 and SiC by 90/10 to 30/70 of mixing ratio and the mixture is hot pressed in a reducing atmosphere such as hydrogen under conditions such as high temp. as 1,300 deg.C and 1 ton pressing force to produce a metal-contg. ceramic sintered preform. The preform is dipped in a molten Al alloy to obtain a composite body comprising the preform impregnate with the Al alloy as a metal matrix by 80/20 to 30/70. Then a hard plating layer such as Ni-P alloy is formed on both surfaces of the preform by an electroless plating method. Thus, the composite material having excellent fracture toughness or shock resistance against a flying and colliding object such as a metal material or stones can be produced at a low cost.
