    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To discriminate a covered area from an uncovered area with a small processing load, and to reduce deterioration in a boundary area between a foreground and a background in the covered area or the uncovered area. SOLUTION: A first motion vector v1 and a second motion vector v2 are moved in parallel so as to pass the position of a generated pixel P of an interpolated frame F, four local areas which are the start and end points of the first and the second motion vectors v1, v2 moved in parallel are defined as search areas, and the first motion vector v1 or the second motion vector v2 is specified from the search areas. Consequently, generation of a gap with no image data and a portion with overlapping image data in the interpolated frame F are prevented. Further, the possibility of selecting an incorrect motion vector is reduced, and correct frame interpolation can be achieved in a covered area and an uncovered area by using two reference frames.
