摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aberration compensating element composed of a first and second delay members combinedly, which have a mutually different refractive index with respect to a prescribed polarized light so that the phase difference of the light selectively passing through the element varies by the polarization of incident light, and to provide an optical pickup device incorporating this element. SOLUTION: The aberration compensating element 130 is formed with such a structure that the phase difference of the light passing through the element increases or decreases depending on a distance from the optical axis with respect to a wavelength variation, and is employed in the optical pickup device for a high density recording medium. Consequently, a high optical efficiency can be obtained while chromatic aberration is compensated that is due to the minute wavelength variation of short wavelength light at the time of recording reproducing mode conversion for the high density recording medium. This aberration compensating element generates phase difference in the light that selectively passes through the element by the polarization of incident light; hence, it can be employed in the optical pickup device adaptable for a high density and low density recording mediums using mutually different two wavelengths orthogonally crossing each other.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a digital disk compatible with a compact disk by converging laser light sources having each a first beam with a relatively short wavelength and a second beam with a relatively long wavelength with an objective lens, performing phase conversion to the second beam and converging a second beam spot on a second recording medium on a position far from a first recording medium. SOLUTION: The beam of a 650 nm wavelength from a laser diode light source 31 is successively reflected, transmitted by a first polarizing light splitter 32 and a second polarizing light splitter 33 to be made incident on a collimation lens 34. The beam of a 780 nm wavelength from the laser diode light source 40 is reflected by the second polarizing light splitter 33 to be made incident on the collimation lens 34. The collimation lens 34 collimates the beam from the second polarizing light splitter 33 parallel to an optical axis vertical to a surface of a variable diaphragm 35, and transmits it through wavelength selectively by the variable diaphragm 35. A phase plate 36 is placed between the variable diaphragm 35 and the objective lens 37, and converges a light spot size on a CD-R disk 9 to perform recording/reproducing of information.

Furthermore, this invention provides the seek direction detector and method that is configured to detect a seek direction of the recording medium adopting a land/groove structure by comparing the detected defocus error signal with a push-pull tracking error signal. Since the detected defocus error signal is not susceptible to a relative tilt of a recording medium with respect to an objective lens, a de-track, and a shift of the objective lens or the like, using this defocus error signal can accurately control the defocus and detect a change in the thickness of the recording medium.
