    • PURPOSE:To align optical waveguides and optical fibers facing each other so as to have an allowance for the permissible threshold of the optical loss of every combination of both. CONSTITUTION:The optical waveguides 13 and the optical fibers 4 are disposed to face each other and the combinations of the optical waveguides 13 and the optical fibers 4 facing each other are set as combination ports. The operation to select the port which is max. in the compared loss quantity for selecting the port where the light loss quantity exceeding the permissible threshold of the loss is max. or the degree of allowance to the permissible threshold is min. among the combinations of the respective ports is executed at the time of starting the alignment. A temporary alignment operation is executed in such a manner that this port comes to an alignment position and thereafter the second port is selected by the operation to select the port which is max. in the compared loss quantity and the alignment position of the second port is determined. The fine adjustment quantity to maximize the min. value of the degree of allowance for the permissible threshold of the light loss quantity is determined by the operation to determine the optimum fine movement quantity in accordance with the deviation quantity of the second port from this alignment position. A fiber arranging means 5 is moved relative to an optical waveguide chip 1 by as much as this fine movement quantity, by which the optical waveguides 13 and the optical fibers 4 are integrally aligned.

    • PURPOSE:To improve the positioning accuracy of optical fibers by irradiating the optical fibers with UV rays by using a means for increasing the intensity of the UV rays to be cast near to the optical fibers. CONSTITUTION:The coated optical fibers 13 and an optical fiber ribbon 14 are arranged in a molding flask and a UV curing resin is packed into the block molding region between this molding flask and the optical fibers. The UV rays are then radiated from a UV source 15 and the UV curing resin packed in the flask is irradiated simultaneously with the UV rays for five minutes from two directions; the upper surface of an upper cap 11 and the back surface of a lower flask 12. The UV curing resin is cured by irradiation with the UV rays. The difference in the intensity of the UV rays generated between the packed resin near the optical fibers and the packed resin around the molding flask is decreased by the simultaneous irradiation of the packed UV resin from the two directions in such a manner and, therefore, the delay in curing of the packed resin near the optical fibers is relieved or eliminated and the strains concentrating to the packed resin near the optical fibers is relieved or eliminated.
