    • PURPOSE:To remarkably improve the life of a magnetic recording medium by providing a magnetic layer consisting of a material having ferromagnetism, a layer consisting of an org. material and a layer consisting of carbon in this order on a supporting base body. CONSTITUTION:The org. material layer is provided as an intermediate layer between a carbon film and the magnetic layer. The carbon layer is formed by a method for forming said layer under the conditions under which electrons, ions or neutral particles having the energy enough to disconnect the bond of the org. material surface in the initial period of formation are made incident on the treated surface. The org. material to be used for the org. material layer is required to be made into a thinner film having preferably 0.1-0.001mum thickness and has preferably >=50kg/cm adhesive power. The method for forming the org. material layer includes coating, sputtering, plasma polymn, and vapor deposition methods. The exfoliation and removal of the carbon protective layer during sliding of the magnetic recording medium with a head is thereby prevented and the lubricating performance intrinsic to carbon is provided. The life of the magnetic recording medium is thus remarkably improved.

The valve 14 is opened in the state. Vapor of the org. compound is activated with the plasma in the vessel 15, and the activated vapor is not adsorbed on the inner wall of the vessel 15, and a film is efficiently formed on the substrate 6.

Then, the upper layer 3 undergoes plasma development with plasma containing fluorine. Next, the lower layer 2 undergoes plasma development with plasma containing oxygen. When the organic thin film containing metal elements are brought into contact with oxygen plasma, SiO2, Al2O3, etc. are generated in the film and the film becomes hard to be decomposed, so that a remained film rate of the lower resist can be improved.
