    • PURPOSE:To obtain a recording medium of which the recording and reproducing output does not decrease even if a bit area is reduced by forming a magnetic layer in such a manner that the S.F.D value thereof is 0.1-0.6 or the S* value of the magnetic layer has 0.6-1.0 value. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic recording medium formed with the magnetic layer having the S.F.D. value in the 0.1-0.6 range or the magnetic recording medium formed with the magnetic layer having the S* value in the 0.6-1.0 range is obtd. as the magnetic recording medium. The S.F.D. value is determined by forming the differential curve 2 of the B-H curve 1 of the magnetic layer from said curve, designating the max. crest value thereof as l, determining the points X1, X2 on the axis of abscissa where the crest value is l/2, and further determining the point HC on the axis of abscissa of the crest value l. The S.F.D value is determined from (X1-X2)/Hc. The S* value is determined by forming straight lines 3, 4 with respect to the B-H curve of the magnetic layer and determining the value Hs on the axis of abscissa corresponding to the intersected point 6 thereof. The S* value is obtd. from Hc/Hs. Such magnetic recording medium has the higher density and the smaller bit area and permits the quick reaction of magnetic moment in spite of an increase in writing frequency. The recording and reproducing output is, therefore, remarkably improved.

    • PURPOSE:To eliminate a slide breakdown and abnormal abrasion between a magnetic head and recording medium by treating the recording medium facing surface of the magnetic head so that its surface energy is less than a specific value. CONSTITUTION:A surface treated film 3 having film thickness (d) is formed on the recording medium facing surface 2 of a cre 1. A surface treating agent is applied over the recording medium facing surface of the magnetic head to reduce the surface energy of the recording medium facing surface of said mag netic head below 40dyne/cm. Consequently, the dislocation of a lubricant from the recording medium and the sticking of foreign matter are reduced, and the life of the recording medium and magnetic head is improved.

    • PURPOSE: To obtain the titled lightweight substrate for a magnetic disk while keeping high rigidity by mixing a whisker into an aluminum alloy.
      CONSTITUTION: Although an aluminum alloy sheet is widely used as the substrate for a magnetic disk, a coarse intermetallic compd. is formed between aluminum and an impurity element Fe which is contained in the sheet in a small amt., and the compd. is the prime cause of a bit error when the substrate is used for a magnetic disk. When the content of the impurity element Fe is reduced in high-purity aluminum, the mechanical strength is decreased. When a silicon carbide whisker 3 having 0.01W0.3μm diameter is mixed into a high- purity aluminum alloy 2 contg. ≤0.01% impurity element Fe and which is used as a substrate 1 for a magnetic disk, the tensile strength is increased as the volume ratio of the whisker is increased. Accordingly, even when the substrate 1 for a magnetic disk is thinned and made lightweight, high rigidity can be maintained.
