    • A tunable wavelength filter is independent of the polarization. The filter includes first and second liquid crystal layers. Each liquid crystal layer includes two opposing glass substrates on which transparent electrodes, dielectric mirrors and alignment layers are coated in this order, respectively, and a liquid crystal interposed between the opposing alignment layers. In the first liquid crystal layer, the molecule alignment of the liquid crystal is twisted by n pi /2 radian to one twisting direction where n is a positive uneven number. In the second liquid crystal layer, the molecule alignment of the liquid crystal is twisted by -n pi /2 radian to the twisting direction. The first and second crystal layers are laid to overlap each other so that an axis of liquid crystal molecules on the emission side of the first liquid layer is perpendicular to an axis of liquid crystal molecules on the incidence side of the second liquid crystal layer.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to obtain a modulated light signal of a high quenching ratio from such an optical modulator even while it is driven at a low voltage, as is suitable for the use when an optical signal is modulated, for example, in a terminal device of an optical transmission system. SOLUTION: This optical modulator is constituted so that a power branching part 2A for branching incident light into two branch light, a 1st intensity modulating part 3 which performs intensity modulation on one of the branch light branched by the power branching part 2A and outputs an intensity-modulated light signal containing a DC component, an optical phase shifting part 2-3 which performs phase shifting on the optical phase of the other branch light branched by the power branching part 2A so as to be in opposite phase to the above intensity-modulated light signal, and a DC-component suppression part 2B which makes the above intensity-modulated light signal and the phase-shifted light interfere with each other and suppresses the DC component contained in the above intensity-modulated light signal for emitting it.
