      SOLUTION: The optical device has a sheet light for emitting a luminous flux, and a plurality of optical devices for converting the luminous flux into a sheet light shape. The optical device is suitable for illuminating, in particular, the tomographic layer of each of three-dimensional specimens in a selective plane illumination microscope (SPIM). This optical device includes a means for altering a cross-section of a sheet light 3, a means for altering the length of the sheet light 3, and/or a means for affecting the direction in which each of the emitting components running in the sheet light 3 is oriented toward the specimen substances. Thus, when the same specimen tomographic layer is observed using different objective lenses, the geometric shape of the sheet light 3 can satisfy the corresponding illuminating conditions. If necessary, a shade formed in the observed specimen tomographic layer, which results from the illumination, can be reduced.
