    • PURPOSE:To obtain the zirconium-type hydrogen occluding alloy capable of occluding a large amount of hydrogen and also capable of executing occlusion and release of hydrogen rapidly and easily, by providing Zr as principal component and specific percentage of specified metals and executing alloying. CONSTITUTION:The alloy having a rational formula by atomic number composition represented by formula (1) is refined in an arc furnace with the inert gas atmosphere, for the hydrogen occluding alloy. In formula (1), A is at least 1 kind of metal selected among Ti, Nb, and Mo, and the values of quantitative coefficients (x), (y), (k), (l), and (m) are as follows: 0.4 0. The molten alloy is cooled to room temp. in the furnace, solidified, and taken out. The solidified alloy is further heated to 1,000-1,100 deg.C for 8hr under the high vacuum atmosphere and cooled to be homogenized, which is subjected to crushing into the proper granular shape to be made to increase in its surface area. The hydrogen occluding capacity of the alloy can be thus improved.

The sulfides of the IIaWVa group elements formed by adding S enhance the activating performance required to occlude hydrogen, improve the plateau retentivity under equilibrium pressure for hydrogen dissociation, and increase the amount of hydrogen to be stored at a temp. close to room temp. and the amount of hydrogen to be released. The alloy material is obtd. at a low cost.
