    • PURPOSE:To assure a liquid crystal layer region which is nearly uniform in the orientation direction of liquid crystal molecules. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal optical deflection element 1 has a flat planar liquid crystal layer 2. A first impressing electrode film 3a and first grounding electrode film 3b constituting a first electrode pair 3 are displaced by a displacement quantity DELTAalong the liquid crystal layer 2 and are arranged to face the liquid crystal layer 2. A second electrode pair 4 is also constituted in the same manner as for the first electrode pair 3. Electric lines E1 of force which extend between the electrode films 3a, 3b extend diagonally with the perpendicular N on the inner flanks of the electrode films 3a, 3b when voltages are impressed to the respective electrode pairs 3, 4. Eventually, the liquid crystal molecules 2a are oriented in the direction L along the electric lines E1 of force and, therefore, the light past the liquid crystal optical deflection element 1 is deflected in the direction L. At this time, the voltage polarity to be impressed to the first electrode pair 3 is reversed from the voltage polarity to be impressed to the second electrode pair 4 and the distance between the electrode pairs 3 an 4 is set larger than the distance between the electrode films 3a and 3b with respect to the direction L, by which the liquid crystal layer 2 region nearly uniform in the orientation direction of the liquid crystal molecules is assured.

    • PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal light deflecting element, which can control liquid crystal molecules evenly and which eliminates the problem of scattering of the incident light. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal light deflecting element is made of a liquid crystal cell, which is formed by pinching a liquid crystal layer 3 at an even thickness between a pair of transparent substrates 1, 2 arranged opposite to each other, and this liquid crystal light deflecting element deflects the incident light, which enters the liquid crystal layer 3 obliquely. In the one transparent electrode 2 side, liquid crystal molecules are orientated in the direction parallel with the surface of the substrate 1, and in the other transparent substrate 2 side, liquid crystal molecules are orientated in the direction vertical to the surface of the substrate 2. Thickness of the liquid crystal layer 3 is set small within a range, in which the liquid crystal layer 3 does not show the directivity.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain the deflector optical which obtains an extended angle of deflection than the conventional by making incident light, transmitted through a polarizing plate, incident on an incidence surface from one direction and making the normal of the incidence surface unmatch with the incidence direction. CONSTITUTION:This optical deflector is equipped with a wedge type or Fresnel type liquid crystal prism where the incident light transmitted through the polarizing plate is made incident on the incidence surface from the one direction and the emission light is emitted from the emission surface in a direction deflected from the incidence direction. Then the normal of this incidence surface does not match the incidence direction. The wedge type liquid crystal prism is made with 1st and 2nd flat plate shaped transparent substrates 1 and 2 joined at a prescribed vertex angle alpha deg. with a sealant, forming 1st and 2nd transparent conductive films on the inner surfaces of the 1st and 2nd transparent substrates 1 and 2, and further 1st and 2nd horizontal orientation films on the inner surfaces of the 1st and 2nd transparent conductive films are formed. Then nematic liquid crystal 3 having positive dielectric anisotropy is sealed in the wedge shaped space partitioned with the 1st and 2nd transparent substrates 1 and 2.

    • PURPOSE:To provide the focal length variable liquid crystal lens which does not require polarizing plates and is simple in construction. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal lens is constituted of a liquid crystal cell having the lens shape formed by subjecting a 1st oriented film 3 to an orientation direction in a lateral direction (p direction) and subjecting a 2nd oriented film 6 to an orientation treatment in the direction (q direction) perpendicular to the plane of Fig. The polarization component of the incident light in the direction (a) parallel with the orientation treatment direction (p) of the 1st oriented film 3 is an extraordinary ray to the liquid crystal molecules oriented in parallel with the above-mentioned (p) and is an extraordinary ray to the liquid crystal molecules oriented in parallel with the above-mentioned (q). The liquid crystal molecules change the direction gradually in the direction perpendicular to the conductive film according to voltages when electric fields are impressed to the lens and, therefore, the apparent refractive indices of the liquid crystal 8 change continuously from the value to the extraordinary ray to the value to the ordinary ray for the extraordinary ray components of the incident light in the above-mentioned (a) direction and (b) direction. The effect of varying the focal length is thus received.

    • PURPOSE:To improve a response speed and to prevent the decrease of contrast by using a liquid crystal formed by adding a chiral liquid crystal to a nematic liquid crystal is used as a liquid crystal and orienting oriented films in such a manner that the inclination angles of the liquid crystal molecules thereof are not complementary between the upper and lower oriented films. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal formed by adding the chiral liquid crystal to the nematic liquid crystal is used as the liquid crystal 18 of the liquid crystal display element disposed between two sheets of polarizing plates 20a, 20b. The oriented films 14a, 14b are formed on the surfaces, which face each other, of transparent substrates 10a and 10b and are subjected to an orientation treatment for deformation of the substrate surfaces to change the rubbing direction of the oriented films in such a manner that the inclination angles theta of the liquid crystal molecules 18 are not complementary between the upper and lower oriented films. The term 'the inclination angles are not complementary' refers to the case in which the inclination angle theta of the upper substrate surface 10a and the inclination angle theta of the lower substrate surface 10b when the liquid crystal molecules 18 turn 90 deg. are exactly reverse. The arrangement defect by the twist of the liquid crystal molecules is prevented in this way, by which the unequal display is eliminated and the display quantity is improved.
