    • PURPOSE:To accurately measure the quantity of a difference in the outer surface level of a weld by a simple instrument by detecting the quantity of the displacement in the horizontal direction orthogonally intersecting the direction of the pipe axis of an object to be measured and the quantity of the rotation of the object in a circumferential direction and correcting differences in the values of detected distances in accordance with both of the quantities. CONSTITUTION:Distance detectors D1 and D2 are arranged above a pipe P and on both sides of a feed center line CL with suitable distances therefrom. Distance detectors D3 and D4 are arranged on both the sides of the pipe P and the line CL with suitable distances between the line CL and the detectors D3 and D4. All the detectors detect the distances between the outer surface of the pipe P and the detectors. When the profile of the outer surface near the weld of the pipe P is approximated by, for example, the accompanying elliptic expression I, the level differences Ys1 and Ys2 produced by the lateral displacement and the rotation of the pipe, respectively, are given by a solution Ys1=[(Bl1-C)+{(bl1+C) -4A(Dl1 -El1+ F} ]/2A and another solution. When the pipe is laterally displaced and rotated and the values of the distances detected by the distance detectors D1 and D2 are L1a and L2a, respec tively, the quantity dW1 of the difference in the outer surface level of the weld corrected in accordance with the lateral displacement quantity dh and the circumferential rotational quantity dQ is obtained from the accompanying expression II.

    • PURPOSE:To measure the quantity of a difference in the outer surface level of a weld on-line by a simple instrument by detecting the quantities of displacement in a horizontal direction and of rotation in a circumferential direction and, in accordance with both of the quantities, correcting differences in the detected values of circumferential distances using the equation of an outer surface profile obtained from the group of the detected values of the distances in the circumferential direction. CONSTITUTION:Equations Y=FL(x), Y=FR(x) indicative of the profiles of outer surfaces in a circumferential direction on both sides of a weld are obtained from the group of the values of detected distances by displacing a distance detector D1 or D2 with a suitable step in a horizontal direction orthogonally intersecting the direction of the axis of a pipe P. Then, a coordinate transformation is applied to the equations of X and Y at a given measuring time in accordance with a horizontal displacement quantity dh and a rotational quantity dQ to be changed to Ya=FL(Xa) and Ya=Fa(Xa), respectively. When the X coordinates (l1, L2) of the measuring points S1a and S2a on the outer surface of the pipe in an X-Y coordinate system are transformed to l1a and l2a, respectively, in an Xa-Ya coordinate system, the quantity dWa of the difference in the outer surface level of the weld that is corrected in accordance with the displacement and rotational quantities dh and dQ, respectively, can be obtained by an accompanying expression, where L1a and L2a are the values of detected distances at the measuring points S1a and S2a, respectively.

    • PURPOSE:To decrease considerably scale defects and to improve the quality of a product by providing oxide scale strippers consisting of air-water spray nozzle arrays on the front face of descalers in at least >=2 places of a finishing mill and a roughing mill. CONSTITUTION:A slab 1 is introduced through a scale breaker 2, roughing mills R1-R5, a finishing mill F0, and a crop shear 3 to continuous finishing mills F1-F6, by which the slab is rolled to a prescribed size. The rolled slab is removed of scale by descaling nozzles A-H. Oxide scale strippers consisting of air-water spray nozzle arrays 5c, 5d and 6e, 6f are provided on the front face of the descaling nozzles E, F to stick micro water droplets on the surface of the slab 1 and to strip the oxide scale formed on the surface of the slab 1. The water is so sprayed that the micro water droplets stick to the slab 1 at about 75-1,500cc/cm .sec water amount density during the time when the slab passes the stripper at about 1-30sec.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the working property of measurement by providing an optical wave range finder on a clamp attachably and detachably mounted within a steel pipe pile, and measuring the height of the pipe earth at the time of penetrating the pipe into the ground. SOLUTION: A clamp 3 attachably and detachably mounted within an open end steel pipe pile 1 has an optical wave range finder 4 to measure the height (h) of the pipe earth 2 intruding into the pile 1 in no contact. The position of the range finder 4 is set within a limit distance related to the clamp set error and the beam characteristic so that an optical wave beam 5 never interferes with the inner wall of the pile 1. When an open end steel pipe pile having a blade on the lower end outer surface thereof is rotated and pressed into the ground, the range finder 4 is provided on the pile in the same manner, and the pipe earth height measurement data is radio transmitted from a transmitter provided at the top of the pile to a receiver on the ground to measure the height of the pipe earth intruding into the pipe in no contact in the penetration of the pile to the ground. According to this, the measurement can be safely performed without interrupting the penetrating work of the pile, and the tip support force of the pile can be precisely evaluated.
