A machining method comprises processes of selecting an appointed tool out of a plurality of tools by moving a tool slide in X and Y axes directions and positioning the appointed tool in an appointed tool insertion start point determined for every tool or tool set, a process for cutting a work by moving the tool under an appointed cutting condition, and a tool intercharnge process for moving the tool to its appointed retreat position determined for every tool or tool set after the cutting process is finished and moving the tool directly so that it may reach the tool insertion start point for a subsequently selected tool from the retreat position in the shortest time.

    • PURPOSE:To aim at a sharp cut of non-cutting time by, first, establishing an awaiting point for each tool on a plural number of tool bench and second, selecting and ordering the first and the second tools to be used, respectively, in the first and second machine processing based on a program with the second tool awaiting at the established point while the first process is being performed. CONSTITUTION:A T4, which is a cutting off bit, it to be moved back to a point on the circumference of a circle Cb which is slightly larger than the diameter of a raw material (d) from the center of a raw material 1 (hereinafter referred to as the 'awaiting point'). Simultaneously, a first tool T1 to be used next is positioned by approaching toward the awaiting point by means of a rapid traverse and the tool T1 is further advanced to cut the raw material 1. In parallel with the advancing of the tool T1, the tool T4 is moved back using the rapid traverse method to a circumference of a circle Ca which is the extreme backdown position and, simultaneously, a tool T3, which is the second tool, is advanced to that extreme backdown position by the rapid traverse method. The non-cutting time used for tool exchanging can be sharply reduced by constantly selecting the tool to be used by a numerically controlled device to have the tool awaited at the awaiting point.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent any interference between tools themselves at the time of tool exchanging, by making them advance or retreat while maintaining such a relationship that the total amount of distances from the center line of a workpiece in a combination of two pieces of tools to the cutting edge position becomes larger than the specified numerical value. CONSTITUTION:For example, when a cutting tool 26 retreats after completion of cutting, and the next cutting tool 21 is selected and goes forward, distances a1 and a2 between each spindle center line of these cutting tools 26 and 21 and the cutting edge position are added, and advance or retreat of these cutting tools 21 and 26 is carried out while maintaining that this total amount is made so as to become larger than the specified value C. This specified value C is set up with the total amount of distances C1 and C2 from each spindle center of both cutting tools 21 and 26 to the cutting edge position, that is, C=C1+C2 when these cutting tools 21 and 26 are most approached to each other. Thus, these tools are mutually approachable to the limit while preventing any interference between tools themselves, and if these tools are no fear of interference with each other, they are simultaneously machinable, thus noncutting time is shortened and whole working time can be made reducible.

    • PURPOSE:To make a holding volume for machined chips and machining oil larger, cleaning easier and eliminate an effect of heat of the machining oil by cutting a front end of a bed at approximately below a tool post and arranging a device for receiving the machined chips independently of the bed and freely movably. CONSTITUTION:Chips produced by machining with tools 17, 23 and 30 and machining oil supplied to a machined portion are made to pass through a chute portion 1a and to fall into a chip receiving basket 42 in a chip and machining oil receiving box 40 in front of a bed 1 and independent of the bed 1 on a floor. The chips are made to collect in the chip receiving basket 42 while the machining oil is made to be stored in an oil tank arranged at a lower stage of the basket 42. The machining oil collected and filtered with a strainer 43 is drawn up with a pump 46 and supplied in circulation through a pipe 47 to a machined portion of a guide bush 15. With the above constitution, the bed 1 is prevented from being affected by the heat of the machining oil and the machined chips can be cleared without stopping the machine as well as enabling a holding volume for the machined chips and machining oil larger.

    • PURPOSE:To reduce the size of a device and to improve the productivity, by a method wherein two main spindles are positioned facing each other, a fluctuation in a relative distance between the tool rest of an automatic lathe, the main spindles of which perform machining independently from each other, and the main spindle is reduced. CONSTITUTION:A workpiece 17 of a first main spindle 2 is primarily machined in a given shape by means of a tool 8 of a first tool rest 7. The workpiece 17, on which primary machining is applied, is moved to a second main spindle 13, and secondary machining is applied thereon by means of a tool 16 of a second tool rest 15. In movement of the workpiece 17 to the second main spindle 13, the tool rest 7 is moved in a direction in which it is separated away from the axis of the main spindle 2 along a guide passage 6, and subsequently, the second main spindle is moved in the direction of an axis along a guide passage 12. This constitution enables the first and second main spindles 2 and 13 to be positioned closer to each other, and enables reduction of the size of a device.
