    • PURPOSE: To prepare the titled two compounds simultaneously, by subjecting 3,5,3',5'-tetra-t-butyl-4,4'-biphenol and phenol to a transalkylation reaction using activated clay as a catalyst.
      CONSTITUTION: 3,5,3',5'-Tetra-t-butyl-4,4'-biphenol is reacted with phenol (preferably in a ratio of 1:2W20) in the presence of an activated clay catalyst at about 150W220°C under heating, so that the t-butyl group is subjected to transalkylation on the meta position of phenol, to give 4,4'-biphenol and meta-t-butylphenol (mBP) simultaneously.
      EFFECT: mBP can be formed preferentially in high selectivity ratio.
      USE: 4,4'-Biphenol is a raw material for heat-resistant synthetic resin, and mBP is an intermediate for synthesizing drugs, agricultural chemicals, etc.
