    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting a fault in a FC-AL(fiber channel arbitration loop) system that can efficiently detect a loop fault with a low error rate not reaching out-of-synchronism and identify the fault location.
      SOLUTION: A device compatible with the FC-AL system is provided with a transmission section having a function of judging whether or not output processing is performed in its own port and transmitting a diagnostic frame with priority when no output processing is performed or transmitting an output processing signal with priority and with a reception section having a function of detecting a loop fault by always applying CRC check to a received frame and aborting the received frame after applying the CRC check when the received frame is the diagnostic frame. Thus, each device compatible with the FC-AL system connected to the loop always applies CRC check to the received frame to supervise the occurrence of a loop fault. Thus, the device compatible with the FC-AL system detecting a fault reports the occurrence of the fault so as to quickly detect even a loop fault with a low error rate and identify the fault location.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably exchange diagnostic and test information between transceivers over a digital subscriber line in the presence of voice communication and/or other disturbances. SOLUTION: Upon detection of a trigger, such as an excess over an error threshold or a direction of a user, a diagnostic link system enters a diagnostic information transmission mode. This diagnostic information transmission mode allows two modems to exchange diagnostic and test information that may not be exchangeable during normal communication. The diagnostic information transmission mode is initiated by transmitting an initiate diagnostic link mode message to a receiving modem accompanied by a cyclic redundancy check (CRC). The receiving modem determines, based on the CRC, if a robust communications channel is present or not. If a robust communications channel is present, the two modems can initiate exchange of the diagnostic and test information. If a robust communication channel is not present, the transmission power of the transmitting modem is increased and the initiate diagnostic link mode message is retransmitted to the receiving modem until the CRC is determined to be correct.
