    • PURPOSE:A bundle of acrylonitrile polymer filaments of a specific fineness is preoxidized under specific conditions so that each filament has a specific filament density and heat-treated to give carbon filaments of high strength, high elasticity and homogeniety in individual filaments, in high efficiency. CONSTITUTION:A filament bundle of acrylonitrile polymer which has a filament fineness of 0.3-1.5 denier and more than 15,000 denier total fineness is fed into the preoxidation oven which has 3 different stages differing in the filament- treating temperature in an oxidative atmosphere, as the width W (mm) of the bundle is kept at in the range satisfying the equation: 2.22X10 D D (D is the total fineness) to effect preoxidation under such conditions as the filament density satisfies the equation [rhon is the filament density (g/ml) after n-th treatment; rhoo is the density of original syn thetic fiber; rhok is filament density on the completion of the preoxidation; tn is preoxidation time (minutes) at the n-th stage; K is the stage number of preoxidation oven), then the bundle is heat-treated at 1,100-2,000 deg.C in an inert atmosphere to give the objective filaments.

    • PURPOSE: Acrylonitrile synthetic fiber is treated to give preoxidized fiber of a specific density and the fiber is heat treated stepwise under tension in an inert atmosphere, then heat treated at high temperature to produce the titled carbon fiber with high orientation, uniformity and performance without yarn defects.
      CONSTITUTION: Acrylonitrile synthetic fiber is treated so that its density becomes 1.25W1.37g/cm
      3 to give preoxidized fiber and the resultant fiber is heat treated under tension in an inert atmosphere to adjust its density to 1.40W 1.57g/cm
      3 . Further, the tension is increased and the heat treatment is continued until the density reaches 1.57W1.70g/cm
      3 , subsequently the heat treatment is conducted in an inert atmosphere over 800°C to give the objective high-strength carbon fiber. The preoxidation temperature at the first step preferably ranges 250W600°C and at the second step, 400W800°C.
