摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a 1-substituted-4,5-diphenyl-2- imidazolidinone, by which the 1-substituted-4,5-diphenyl-2-imidazolidinone useful as an adjuvant for an asymmetric synthesis is effectively obtained by reacting an ethanediamine derivative with urea, phosgene, etc. SOLUTION: A 1-substituted-4,5-diphenyl-2-imidazolidinone is obtained by reacting an optically active N-substituted-1,2-diphenyl-1,2-ethanediamine of formula I [R is a (substituted) hydrocarbon; (*) represents the position of an asymmetric carbon] with urea, phosgene or triphosgene in the method for producing the 1-substituted-4,5-diphenyl-2-imidazolidinone. The reaction of the compound of formula I is performed in the presence of a little amount of water by heating with the urea at 100-250 deg.C for 1-8hr when the urea is used. When the phosgene or triphosgene is used, the reaction is performed in the presence of a base in a solvent at 0-100 deg.C for 1-48hr. The objective compound of formula II is obtained by a small man-hour in high efficiency and in high yield without the processes for protecting and deprotecting.

The amounts of the haloiminium salt and the base are 1mol and 2mol based on 2mol of the carboxylic acid, respectively. The haloiminium salt (e.g. 2-chloro-1,3-dimethylimidazolinium chloride) is produced by reacting a compound of formula II (an easily available solvent) with a halogenation agent (e.g. oxalyl halogenide).
