    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To synthesize the subject compounds having useful activities such as an inhibiting activity against aldose reductases, an antimicrobial activity or a preventing activity against the attachment of underwater organisms by eliminating substituent groups of a dihydrobenzopyran derivative. SOLUTION: Substituent groups R of a dihydrobenzopyran derivative represented by formula I (Rs are each a protecting group of hydroxy group and preferably methyl group) are eliminated to thereby produce the objective compounds represented by formula II. For example, when Rs are each methyl group, a method for reacting Me3SiI in chloroform solvent at 25-50 deg.C for 12-140 h is cited as the method for eliminating the substituent groups R. The compound represented by formula I is prepared by heating, e.g. a phenol represented by formula III in the presence of a Grignard reagent, providing a compound represented by formula IV, introducing the protecting groups R, then reacting the resultant compound with a brominating agent, lithiating the resultant compound with t-BuLi, subsequently introducing carboxyl groups with CO2, methyl etherifying the prepared compound with TMSCHN2, reducing the obtained compound and then oxidizing the reduction product.
