    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a circuit for driving a switching element S*# adapted for active gate control which appropriately suppresses increases in surge voltage and switching loss.SOLUTION: If an input voltage VH to an inverter is found not to be too high, active gate control is performed to change a charging/discharging rate of a gate of the switching element S*# in the middle of a period from beginning to end of gate charging/discharging by the process of charging/discharging the gate. Specifically the process of determining the timing of changing the gate charging/discharging rate on the basis of the input voltage VH is performed. If the input voltage VH to the inverter is found to be low, on the other hand, the process of charging/discharging the gate is performed with the gate charging/discharging rate maintained at a high rate in the absence of such active gate control.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that, if noise is superposed on a transmission path for a signal indicating to the effect that a collector current has decreased, a discharge path with a high resistance value (a path incorporating a resistor 34) could erroneously be put in a closed state assuming that the collector current has decreased although it actually did not decrease.SOLUTION: When an operation signal g¥# for a switching element S¥# is switched to an off operation command, a first discharge switching element 32 is subsequently switched on, whereby the gate of the switching element S¥# is connected to the emitter via a discharge resistor 30 and the first discharge switching element 32. Thereafter, as a current flowing in the switching element S¥# decreases, the first discharge switching element 32 is switched off on the basis of a sense voltage Vse and also a second discharge switching element 36 is switched on. The sense voltage Vse serving as an input signal for this switching process is enabled only when the operation signal g¥# is an off operation command.
