    • PURPOSE:To observe simultaneously both end faces of optical fibers facing each other, by forming mirror faces in the end part of a butting rod in two directions facing each other at about 45 deg. to the axis of the butting rod. CONSTITUTION:Optical fibers 1 and 1' are brought into contact with both side faces of a butting rod 9 where mirror faces 10 and 10' are formed in two directions facing each other at 45 deg. and optical fibers 1 and 1' are positioned. Thereafter, the butting rod 9 is allowed to fall, and mirror faces 10 and 10' are placed between end faces of optical fibers 1 and 1'. When they are observed by a microscope 4 provided above the butting rod 9, side faces 12 and 12' of optical fibers 1 and 1' and images 11 and 11' of end faces of optical fibers 1 and 1' projected to mirror faces 10 and 10' are observed in the visual field. In this case, lengths l and l' from the center of the visual field to images 11 and 11' are measured and are compared with each other to discriminate whether they are equal to each other, thereby confirming whether optical fibers 1 and 1' are shifted axially or not.

    • PURPOSE:To improve deterioration in quenching ratio greatly by adjusting the connection terminal of a reception-side SP fiber and fixing it in the lightest state, rotating an analyzer by 90 deg., and confirming that the quenching rate is minimum an making a connection. CONSTITUTION:A polarizer 7 is provided on the end surface of an SP fiber 5a facing a monochromatic light source 9 and the analyzer 8 is disposed on the surface of an SP fiber 5b; light passed through the analyzer 7 is displayed on a meter 11 through a photoelectric detector 10. The plane of polarization of the polarizer 7 coincides with either of two orthogonal natural polarization axes of the fiber 5a, e.g. the elliptic long axis of the optical fiber 5a to pass polarized light. Then, a connection part 6 is adjusted so that the meter 11 indicates a maximum value, and the analyzer 8 is rotated by 90 deg. to measure the quenching ratio of output light. This operation is repeated and the connection part 6 is fixed so that the quenching ratio is minimum. Consequently, the deterioration in quenching ratio is improved greatly.

    • PURPOSE:To make the connection of an optical fiber easy at a low loss by cabling optical fibers at least one end of which is connected with another optical fiber having low eccentricity. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber A which is not particularly considered for low eccentricity and an optical fiber B or C having low eccentricity are connected at a low loss by passing, for example, light therethrough prior to cabling and aligning exactly the axes of cores 1a-1c while monitoring said light. The surface of the juncture is thereafter subjected to the treatment with hydrofluoric acid to improve the strength and further the juncture is molded in a resin, whereby the juncture is reinforced to the state of permitting the cabling thereof. The optical fibers are produced with certain variation in structural parameters, and the optical fibers having the value approximate to a reference value can be sampled by inspection and such fibers are designated as the fiber B, C. Therefore, if such construction is applied in the end part of the optical fiber to be connected, the fibers are connected at a low loss simply by matching the outside diameters of the optical fibers.

    • PURPOSE:To form the alignment member of a connector easily with excellent size precision and at low cost, by forming recess grooves for aligning optical fibers by using photosensitive resin. CONSTITUTION:On an inorganic or organic substrate 1, a photosensitive resin layer 3 is formed with an adhesive layer 2 between. The photosensitive resin layer is exposed and then developed to form grooves in a prescribed shape with high precision. The depth of each groove is preferably long enough to reach the adhesive layer penetrating the photosensitive resin layer. Optical fibers 4 are inserted into the grooves respectively, and an adhesive is applied covering the photosensitive resin layer and optical fiber surfaces; and the optical fibers are fixed by using a press plate 6 from above and end surfaces are polished to make excellent connection.
