摘要： PURPOSE:To improve the setting precision of an initial end surface interval and makes a small-loss, high-strength welding connection of optical fibers by butting both optical fiber end surfaces against each other temporarily until their end surface interval is zero, and then moving the optical fiber end parts in leaving directions and setting the initial end surface interval. CONSTITUTION:The optical fiber end surface 8A and 8B are allowed to abut on both surfaces of an end surface interval setting plate firstly to set a rough interval, and then both optical fiber end parts 7A and 7B are moved relatively in their abutting directions until those end surfaces 8A and 8B abut on each other. In this case, the movement distance is extremely small, so neither the optical fiber end part 7A nor 7B flexes. In this state, either of the optical fiber end parts 7A and 7B is moved by a specific extent as shown by an arrow to set the initial end surface interval L2. Then, the optical fiber end parts 7A and 7B are moved again in the end part abutting directions and a connection of both parts by fusion is made through the discharge heating of discharge electrodes 4M and 4N.

摘要： PURPOSE:To obviate surface grazing and to eliminate the cause for breakage by the procedure consisting of removing and cutting the primary covering of fibers and removing chemically the primary covering. CONSTITUTION:The primary covering 2 of the optical fiber 1 is mechanically or chemically removed and is set to a cutter 3. A score 5 is given by a knife 4 to the surface of the covering 2 and the fiber is bent and cut. The fiber 1 is grazed 6 on the surface by contact with the cutter 3, but the cut end 7 is specular and perpendicular. The fiber end is in succession dipped into a hot sulfuric acid and the primary covering 2 is removed by the required length. Two pieces of such optical fibers 1 are aligned and the butt parts 9 are welded and connected by an arc discharge 10. The fibers 1 are satisfactorily welded and connected without surface graze 6 at all according to the above-mentioned constitution.

摘要： PURPOSE:To set an exact source level and to enable optical fiber connection at a low loss by connecting optically the end faces of the optical fibers via a matching liquid while discriminating the connecting conditions in several stages. CONSTITUTION:The end 2A of one optical fiber is slightly moved stepwise toward the other end 2B by a driving system 7 in the stage of connecting optically the end faces of the optical fibers to each other by the matching liquid. An optical signal is fed from this slight light source 9 to the optical fibers 1A, 1B and a photodetector 10, by which the photodetection power is detected. The space between the end faces is narrowed and the photodetection power P1 is attained just before contact with the matching liquid. The level of the power decreases to the photodetection power P2 as the end faces are bridged by the matching liquid when the end faces are further advanced stepwise. The matching liquid between the end faces converge to a stable state on succeeding stepwise advancing and the level of the power increases to the photodetection power P3. The attainment of the optical connection between the end faces by the matching liquid is discriminated when P3-P1 attains >=0.3dB, by which the connection is completed.

CONSTITUTION:The coater 5 having the tip dipped in a liquid tank 7 moves up by specific distance by the quantitative rotaion of a cam 6, part of the matching liquid 8 in the liquid tank 7 sticks on the projection 9 atop the coater and is carried in the same direction, and the matching liquid 9 sticking on the projection part 9 comes into contact with optical fiber end surfaces 4A and 4B. Then, the coater 5 moves down toward its original position by the cam rotation, and a specific amount of matching liquid 9 is left between both end surfaces 4A and 4B. Then, alignment is carried out to obtain the aligned state between optical fibers 1A and 1B, and then both optical end parts 3A and 3B are moved relatively in abutting directions and fusion heat is supplied from a specific machine to weld the end parts 3A and 3B together.

摘要： PURPOSE:To increase a welding and connecting strength of an optical fiber by adding a process for pushing in the optical fiber after stopping a heating by an electric discharge, or immediately before stopping it, when welding and connecting the optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:According to this method, when welding and connecting an optical fiber, after the time point when the whole electric discharge has been stopped, for instance, an optical fiber of 5mum is pushed in. In this way, a thermal distortion of the optical fiber generated by a local heating is eliminated by further pushing in the optical fiber after heating has been stopped, and making a compressive stress work on a connecting part. Therefore, a welding and connecting strength of the optical fiber can be raised to two times of a conventional one.

摘要： PURPOSE:To obtain the heater without necessity of the detecting element for temperature control by using the heater for heating a heat-shrinkable tube in which the temperature sensitive semiconductor resistors having different properties are combined longitudinally along said heat-shrinkable tube so as to keep a constant temperature distribution. CONSTITUTION:A plurality (three in this example) of heat sensitive semiconductor resistors 5 with different properties are arranged longitudinally along the heat-shrinkable tube 2 covering the welding joint of a optical fiber 1 for reinforcement. These heat sensitive semiconductor resistors 5 are combined such that the resistor arranged in the center of the heat-shrinkable tube 2 and the resistors arranged at its ends generate constant temperature distribution. That is to say, the heat sensitive semiconductor resistor 5a with high temperature property is arranged at the center of the heat-shrinkable tube 2, and the heat sensitive semiconductor resistors 56 with low temperature property are arranged at its end parts. Thus, the heater 5 without necessity of the detecting element for temperature control may be obtained.

摘要： PURPOSE:To align optical fibers each other at a high speed with high precision by driving a motor impulsively in the starting stage of alignment, and then driving the motor continuously. CONSTITUTION:This method utilize the driving force of the motor for the mutual alignment of optical fibers. The driving force of the motor is transmitted to a cantilever beam where an optical fiber is mounted through a transmission mechanism to flex the optical fiber, and the quantity of transmitted light from one optical fiber to the other is observed to know the amount of axial displacement. In this case, the motor is driven impulsively with N pulses in the initial stage of the alignment and then driven continuously after the direction wherein the amount of axial displacement is zero is found, and transition to impulsive driving is made when the amount of axial displacement is almost zero. Consequently, the time for the alignment is shortened and the precision of the alignment is improved.

摘要： PURPOSE:To enable execution of all works at a juncture by using a light introducing means which is provided with a light emitting element in the lower part and a provided with an optical waveguide in the inside to align optical firbers in such a way that leaked light is minimized. CONSTITUTION:A light introducing means 10 which is provided with a light emitting element 11 in the lower part and is provided with an optical waveguide 12 in the inside is disposed between two optical fibers 2 and 2'. The waveguide 12 can be easily realized by embedding an optical fiber into the means 10 or constituting the entire part of glas having a difference in refractive index. The alignment is performed by a method consisting of adjusting respectively finely right and left optical fibers 2, 2' in a way as to be aligned to the outlets 12a, 12b of the means 10. The leakage of the light entering the clad part 2'b of the fiber 2' is received by a photodetector 13 and the fibers are aligned until the leakage light is minimized. The execution of all the works at the juncture is thus made possible.
