In the area of contact between the beltlike image carrier 100 and transfer belt 101, a transfer electric field is generated, thus, a toner image formed on the beltlike image carrier 100 is transferred to a transfer material 104 conveyed by the transfer belt 101. In the image forming apparatus having the foregoing configuration, the transfer roller 102 is disposed upstream of the counter roller 103 in the moving direction of the beltlike image carrier 100.
