    • PURPOSE:To restrain the development of cracks in the surface or at inside of a slab of medium or low carbon steel during rolling, by the slow cooling of the molten steel, contg. C, O2, S at prescribed ratios, and having a specified ratio of Mn/S, from molting and solidifying state to a temp. just below a temp. at which it is kept hot, then by keeping the steel at the temp. for a prescribed time. CONSTITUTION:The above-described medium or low carbon steel is slowly cooled from molting and solidifying state to a temp. just below a temp. at which it is kept hot at a rate 1.0 deg.C/sec so as to accelerate the formation of spherical shape of laminar intergranular precipitated material, and to convert fine spherical precipitated material into coarse spherical material, in addition, to solidity nonmetallic inclusions and residual molten steel, thereby restraining the development of the cracks in the slab. In succession to the cooling, the slab is maintained in a temp. range 950-1,300 deg.C for >=10min, thereby spheroidizing similarly the laminar precipitated material which causes rolling cracks in the slab. The synergistic effect of the above-described slow cooling and keeping hot of the slab permits to achieve the purpose completely. The molten steel of medium or low carbon contg. 0.01-0.25% C, =6 Mn/S, is used as the raw material.
