    • PURPOSE: To make it possible to measure the photo input power and output power of a photo repeater at a remote terminal station, by such simple constitution that the output lights of upward bound and downward bound repeaters are respectively inputted to the up and down repeaters through a photo feedback circuit and the input power informations thereof are transmitted to the terminal station.
      CONSTITUTION: In measuring photo input power, an optical switch 8 connects a laser diode 7 and an optical fiber 9 by the remote control signal transmitted from a terminal station through an optical fiber 11. In this state, a modulation circuit 6 is turned ON by the remote control signal from the terminal station and the input light inputted from the optical fiber 11 is converted to an electric signal by an avalanche photodiode 1 while said electric signal is modulated in the modulation circuit 6 by the code converted bias voltage of the avalanche photodiode 1. The modulated electric signal is received at a terminal station through optical fibers 9, 10' while converted to a laser signal by a laser diode 7. In measuring photo output power, the modulation circuit 6 is turned OFF and a modulation circuit 6' is turned ON.

    • PURPOSE:To eliminate power consumption and reduce size by providing a light focusing element having single directivity which focuses the light from the first optical transmission path but does not focus the light from the second optical transmission path. CONSTITUTION:If the length of a cylindrical optical lens 3 is selected slightly longer than (2n-1)/4 times the intrinsic zigzag period, the light signal from the first optical fiber 1 propagates without any loss into the second optical fiber 2 like the beam locus shown by 4. Cinversely, the light signal from the second optical fiber 2 is radiated in fan-form in the beam locus shown in 5, and therefore only part of this light signal is propagated into the first optical fiber by a light focusing element 3. This turns out that the element has single directivity, thus there is no power consumption at all. In addition, there is no need for any generating mechanism for electric fields and magnetic fields and therefore the size may be reduced.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain the title homogeneous preform without containing scattering factors, such as foreign materials or bubbles, by cooling a glass melt for a clad in a cylindrical vessel by a specific means, solidifying the outer peripheral part, discharging the melt in the central part thereof, introducing a glass melt for a core, cooling and solidifying the melts. CONSTITUTION:A cooling cylinder 12 and a melt reservoir part 14 are provided in a cylindrical vessel 1 having openings at both ends and a crucible 3 having openings at both ends is then placed in the cylindrical vessel 1 to close openings 5 and 8 of the lower ends of the cylindrical vessel 1 and crucible 3. Glass 2 for a clad is subsequently filled in the cylindrical vessel 1 and glass 4 for a core is filled in the crucible 3 to melt both glasses by a heating means 9. The crucible 3 is then inserted into the melt accompanying melting of the glass 2 for the clad and fixed at a prescribed position. A cooling gas is subsequently introduced from a gas introduction port 11 into the cooling cylinder 12 to solidify the outer periphery of the melt of the glass 2 for the clad to a prescribed thickness. A plug 8 for the crucible and a plug 7 for the cylindrical vessel are pulled out to discharge the melt in the central part of the glass 2 for the clad into the melt reservoir part 14 and the glass melt 4 for the core is simultaneously introduced into the central part of the glass for the clad and further cool and solidify the whole glass.

    • PURPOSE:To inform whether an activated laser is a spare laser or an active laser to a terminal station with off-line by using a line used for the communication at present to add a simple circuit. CONSTITUTION:An optical input is converted into an electric signal at a photodetecting circuit 1, passes through an OR circuit 23, changed to an optical signal at an LD driving circuit 3 and an LDN5 and is outputted through an optical switch 8. If the LDN is failed, an LD changeover circuit 7 switches the LD driving circuit 4 to a circuit 4, the electric signal is changed to the optical signal by an LD driving circuit 4 and an LDE6 through an OR circuit 24 and is outputted through the optical switch 8. When the terminal station desires to know which of the LDN5 or the LDE6 is activated, a supervising signal conducting loopback again from the terminal station after a loopback path is formed is transmitted. The terminal station discriminates the operation of the LDN5 or the LDE6 by detecting with what mark rate the signal looped back is modulated.
