摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as a synthetic raw material of a metallic ion masking agent, etc., by oxidizing an specific compound by using a catalytic amount of a heavy metal complex salt and an easy-to-handle oxidizing agent. SOLUTION: This objective nitrogen-containing heterocyclic carboxylic acid compound of formula II (e.g.; picolinic acid) is obtained by oxidizing a nitrogen- containing heterocyclic compound of formula I [Q is a 5 to 6-membered monocyclic or a condensed ring aromatic heterocyclic ring containing at least one N-atom; R is a primary alkyl; (n) is 1-5; X is a substituent; (m) is 0-4] with a hypohalogenic acid salt (e.g.; sodium hypochloride) in the presence of a nickel compound (suitably, a nickel (II) complex). Further the above reaction is preferably performed e.g. in an organic solvent such as acetonitrile at a temp. of 0-100 deg.C for 1-24 hr.

The component B is preferably used in an amount of 1-3 equiv. based on the component A and the component D is preferably used in an amount of 1-2 equiv. based on the component A.

The lower alcohol in the mixed solvent is preferably 10-2000 wt.%, based on the spirochroman compound in the crude product. This clathrate compound is insoluble in a medium consisting of an organic compound, such as lower alcohol, and obtained as a highly purified spirochroman clathrate compound.

In formulas I and II, R1-R4 are each hydrogen atom or an aliphatic group, etc., X1 and X2 are each hydrogen atom or an atom or a group capable of being released by a coupling reaction with the oxidant of a color developing agent. Thus, the color reproducibility of the photosensitive material and the image durability of the photosensitive material are improved by forming a cyan color image having a good light absorbing characteristic.
