    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a clay mineral-based antimicrobial material that exhibits antibacterial and antifungal functions, particularly genus Legionella bacteria-suppressing functions, has stable and sufficient activity as an antimicrobial material, and hardly exerts influences on the environment, its manufacturing method and its applications.
      SOLUTION: The manufacturing method of the material exhibiting antimicrobial functions such as antibacterial functions and antifungal functions comprises introducing a metal ion and, as its ligand, caffeine or an extract containing caffeine of a natural product between layers of a clay mineral exhibiting ion exchange capacity. The clay mineral-based antimicrobial material exhibits sufficient antibacterial activity against not only bacteria but also true fungi and comprises a metal ion and its organic ligand comprised of caffeine that exhibits itself mild antibacterial and antifungal performances and exerts mild influences on the environment after discharged into the environment and dissociated. Thus, the new clay mineral-based antimicrobial material hardly exerts influences on the environment unlike conventional chemically synthesized products.
