The R/W channel 21 starts transferring of recording data having the data length informed from the HDC/MPU 23 between the R/W channel and the head 12, in response to the starting instructions of the data transfer notified from the HDC/MPU 23.

SOLUTION: A data unit on a data recording medium includes a control field. A control block on the same medium as that of the data unit designates one or more bit control actions in the control field. When the data unit is written, one or more bits in the control field are written with a proper value matched with control designated by the control block. When the data unit is read, one or more bits in the control field are used for the control of the data unit so as to be designated by the control block. As the result, it is necessary to write the control block only once. Thus, the control field is written as a part of each data unit without updating or rewriting the control block.
