    • PURPOSE:To protect elements against breakdown due to repeated VBO firing with an oscillating current caused by the stray capacitance in the main circuit of a thyristor valve and the reactance of main circuit and a steep forward voltage to be produced immediately thereafter by selecting the constants of a snubber circuit and an anode reactor such that no intermittent current is produced. CONSTITUTION:Capacitance Cn (not shown) of snubber capacitors 16-1-16-N and the resistance Rn (not shown) of snubber resistors 7-1-7-N are set in increase the discharge current of a snubber circuit and to increase the discharge time constant. Furthermore, inductance La (not shown) of an anode reactor 18 is increased and the peak value of discharge current of stray capacitor 21 is suppressed in order to prevent production of an intermittent current from VBO free optical thyristors 6-1-6-N immediately after VBO firing thus disabling turn OFF and preventing application of forward voltage. Consequently, continuous VBO firing can be avoided and the elements can be protected from breakdown due to a forward voltage produced immediately after a short reverse voltage interval.

In this case, a reverse bias voltage is supplied between the gate and cathode of a thyristor 82, which is turned off, and a potential difference is caused between the anode and cathode of the thyristor 82 and power is supplied from a power supply circuit 42 to a photoelectric conversion circuit 52 and an amplifier circuit 62. Thus, the power is supplied to all photoelectric conversion circuit 51-5n and amplifier circuits 61-6n in this way and the thyristor converter is driven by having only to supply the gate signal.

    • PURPOSE:To protect a semi-conductor element from breakdown by magnetically coupling first and second conductors connected each other with reverse polarity and operating converters in phase at high and low potential sides. CONSTITUTION:First conductor 12 connecting between one end of a high potential side capacitor having the other end connected with positive pole and the negative pole of the high potential side converter 9 is magnetically coupled with second conductor 13 connecting between one end of a low potential side capacitor 5 having the other end connected with the negative pole of the low potential side converter 10 and the positive polarity of the low potential side converter 10, where the high potential side converter 9 and the low potential side converter 10 are operated in phase. The conductors 12, 13 function as normal connecting conductors during steady operation. If trouble occurs, the capacitors 2, 5 are discharged through the conductors 12, 13, and the conductors 12, 13 function as reactors and suppress di/dt of discharge current.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a frequency converter that can stably be operated without intermitting the current even under a lightly loaded condition. SOLUTION: The output side of the first converter composed of a forward conversion part 1-1, a DC reactor 2-1 and a reverse conversion part 3-1, and the output side of the second converter composed of a forward conversion part 3-1, a DC reactor 2-2 and a reverse conversion part 3-2 are connected in the vicinity of a connecting point of a capacitor 4b of a load 4. Only one of the two converters is operated until an output current of the frequency converter exceeds a prescribed value, and the other makes the reverse conversion part on standby in a bypass pair state. When the output current exceeds the prescribed value, both the tow converters are parallel-operated, thereby allowing the converter to be operated without intermitting the current even under the light load condition.
