SOLUTION: The γ-PGA, which is a constituent of a viscous body of fermented soybeans and is safe if the γ-PGA is eaten by human beings, or its cross-linked body is a totally harmless deodorant to the organisms. Particularly, the cross-linked γ-PGA can be used for articles such as diapers and sanitary products which make direct contact with the delicate skin of the human beings because of the high water-absorbing function of the cross-linked γ-PGA, and is effective for recycling of excretion or the like in the application to the treatment of the excretion of livestock or the like.

To the filtrate 10wt.% cetylpyridinium chloride, etc., is added for generation of precipitates and the generated precipitates are filtrated and then purified by reprecipitation, thus obtaining the objective high viscous polysaccharide ICC-001 having about 700000 molecular weight (gel filtration method) and -0.16 deg. specific rotatory power (C0.4-1M-NaCl) and containing, as the main constituting components, D-glucose, D-galactose and pyruvic acid in an about 3.3:1 molar ratio of D- glucose to D-galactose.
